2009-10-15: Faculty position in Astrophysics

The Instituto de Astronomía (IA) at the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) is seeking a candidate for a vacancy of professor in astrophysics at any level, starting in March 2010. This position is initially funded by the ESO for a period of two years, and then will be extended as an indefinite appointment funded by the UCN. The extension of the term of the successful candidate is subject to adequate performance of responsibilities during the first two years.
The applicants should hold a PhD in astrophysics or related field and should have a postdoctoral experience. Researchers in any area of astrophysics will be considered. Responsibilities of the successful candidate include the teaching of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as the supervision of postgraduate students.
So, native speakers or those having good command of Spanish are especially encouraged to apply. The appointee will be able to apply for Chile’s 10% share of telescope time for all observatories, both optical and radio, located in the country. In addition, the facilities of the university observatory on Cerro Armazones, located not far from Paranal and operated by the IA, are available. They include a number of telescopes, the largest of which is 1.5-m hexapod telescope with active optics and spectrograph.
